Tours of the San Salvador Tallship
The San Salvador is scheduled to arrive on Friday, August 4. Free public dockside tours will occur on Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6, 2023:
· Saturday, August 5: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
· Sunday, August 6: 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Dockside and shipboard exhibits include text panels explaining San Salvador’s mission and tell about:
- the people she encountered along the California Pacific Coast,
- who was who on board, and
- the ship’s construction. (Why doesn’t it have a ship’s wheel?)
Stepping on board, visitors will be immersed in the year 1542, as they wander the deck as though the crew left a few minutes earlier. Below deck will be a modern-day museum exhibit gallery.
A National Parks Service interpreter will help orient the visiting public before they board the ship. Additionally, trained Santa Barbara Maritime Museum volunteers will be aboard helping and answering questions.
